MOTION FOR A EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT RESOLUTION: on EU options for improving access to medicines

The pharmaceutical system we currently have in the developed world dates back to the 1970s, when it was set up with the principal aim of improving and ensuring patients’ health care safety. This was following the ‘thalidomide tragedy’, one of the deciding factors behind the creation of the EU’s pharmacovigilance system. In the development of the current pharmaceutical market, the World Trade Organisation greatly encouraged the inclusion of medicines in the patent system and the protection of intellectual property rights in the industrial sector in connection with the development of new drugs.
